About Alternative Materials

Beyond Bags’ designer vegan bags are made from these animal and cruelty free materials:

Piñatex

is an innovative new fabric made from pineapple leaves, harnessing advanced technologies to create a totally sustainable high performance natural textile, which feels and looks much like leather. Production is 100% ecological, animal and human friendly. Piñatex fibres are the by-product of the pineapple harvest. No extra land, water, fertilizers or pesticides are required to produce them. Piñatex provides new additional income for farmers while creating a vibrant new industry for pineapple growing countries. The process to create Piñatex and the finished material is patented following 7 years of intense research and development. This textile is water resistant, strong, versatile, breathable, soft, light, flexible, and has passed the ISO international standards tests for: seam rupture, tear resistance, tensile strength, light and color fastness and abrasion resistance.

Cork

Cork is an entirely natural material, being the bark of the Cork Oak, endemic to southwest Europe and northwest Africa. The majority of cork forests are in Spain and Portugal, and 2.2million ha of cork forest worldwide. Once the trees are about 25 years old the cork is traditionally stripped from the trunks every nine years, with the first two harvests generally producing lower quality cork. The trees live for about 300 years. The cork industry is regarded as sustainable because the cork tree is not cut down to obtain cork; only the bark is stripped to harvest the cork. The tree continues to live and grow. Cork forests also prevent desertification and provide habitat for endangered species. Our cork bags can be simply wiped clean with a wet flannel or a baby wipe. There is no need for any protective spray, as cork is already water-resistant.

Polyurethane
(PUR and PU)

Polyurethane (PUR and PU) is a polymer composed of organic units joined by carbamate links. Isocyanates reacting with polyols is what forms PU. Polyols can be derived from vegetable oils. it is chemically inert and not carcinogenic. Polyester-type polyurethanes are more easily biodegraded by fungus than polyether-type.

Felt

Felt is a textile that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing fibres together. Felt can be made of natural fibres such as wool or synthetic fibres such as acrylic. Felt can vary in terms of fibre content, colour, size, thickness, density and more factors depending on the use of the felt.

Glazed fabric

Glazed fabric is a heavy canvas that is coated with a colored glaze which develops a beautiful leather-like patina over time. All glazed fabric bags are water-resistant and machine-washable but must be hung out to dry.

Microsuede

Microsuede is a man-made polyester fabric that can be made from both natural products, such as plant cuticles, and synthetics. Microsuede is a knit blend created from fibers that are very fine, sometimes a hundred times finer than human hair. These delicate fibers are tightly woven together to create a dense fabric that has many of the same qualities as suede yet is generally easier to clean than real suede and much softer. Microsuede is dirt, wrinkle and stain resistant. It is soft and pleasant to the touch but strong, breathable and easy to clean. Unlike suede this material is waterproof.

Micronappa

Micronappa is a high-quality microfibre material similar to nappa leather. It is a top-level technology product, composed of ultra-fine polyester fibres. This fabric is breathable, soft-to-touch, long-lasting, waterproof and easy to clean.
